Frequently Asked Questions
Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?
We recommend all teams members carry food and at least two litres of water, or be prepared to buy water along the way. Every team must carry a mobile phone for safety (it also helps if you can phone a friend for assistance!). Teams may visit any shop along the way to re-stock their supplies.
Q: WHAT DO I WEAR?
It is likely to be hot. So cover up and protect yourself from the sun with a hat, long shirt and trousers. If rain is forecast, bring a rain jacket. Most importantly, wear a comfortable pair of shoes or trainers.
Q: IF WE ARE CATCHING PUBLIC TRANSPORT THROUGHOUT THE RACE, HOW MUCH MONEY WILL WE NEED?
An Opal Card is available from Transport NSW allowing travel on buses, trains and ferries all day for a maximum daily cap amount of $15.40 (Monday-Saturday) or $2.60 (Sunday only). You may wish to bring an extra $15-$20 for food and access to some checkpoints. You will be allowed to catch ferries, buses and trains, no taxis or private cars are allowed. Check out www.transportnsw.info.
Q: HOW FIT OR SKILLED DO I NEED TO BE?
This event has been designed for any skill and fitness level. It can be done at any pace you feel comfortable. The use of public transport has been incorporated so that longer distances may be covered without having to be a super-fit athlete. However it is advised, as with any event, to do some preparation. Walking or running around the block a few times a week in the weeks leading up to the event would be sufficient preparation for this event. This will help to accustom your body to this type of activity, and reduce the chance of any injury during the race.
Q: CAN WE BRING THE KIDS ALONG?
We would like to encourage teams and parents to bring their kids along to enjoy the Urban MAX experience. Kids passes can only be added to a complete (two fully paid entries) team. If you are racing with your kids as the sole adult you will need to pay full price for the first child you register. Limited to kids 8-13 years, you can purchase two additional kids passes for $20 each to add them to your team registration. This option includes a race number to make them feel part of the team.
As part of the option, they are allowed to assist you in solving clues and locating checkpoints. They can also help your team in completing activities at the various activity checkpoints. To book in your kids, just select the appropriate option in our online registration system. If you have a younger child or toddler you would like to bring along in a stroller, you are welcome to do so. There is no additional charge for kids that are not actively involved in the event.
Q: WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE FOR PARTICIPANTS?
The minimum age is 16 years if two teenagers are racing together, otherwise 8 years and older if racing with an adult.
Q: HOW LONG WILL THE EVENT TAKE?
The maximum allowed time to complete the event is 6 hours (9am to 3pm). If your team does not reach the ‘Points Target’ for your respective category within this time you will still be classified as a ranked finisher if you arrive back before 3pm. We expect the quickest teams in both the Racing and Social categories to finish in around 5 hours.
Q: WHAT TIME DOES THE EVENT START?
Typically the schedule for race day will be as follows:
- 07h30 – Registration Opens
- 08h45 – Registration Closes
- 08h50 – Welcome and Competitor Briefing
- 09h00 – Race Start
- 15h00 – Racing & Social Category cut off time

Q: WHAT ARE THE RACE BOUNDARIES?
The race boundaries are set by the map provided to each team at the beginning of the event. All the checkpoints will be within this map area.
Q: CAN TWO TEAMS WORK TOGETHER?
Yes! But make sure you choose your team mates carefully as you don’t want them to slow you down.
Q: WHAT STOPS A TEAM FROM CHEATING, SUCH AS CATCHING A TAXI?
There are a number of marshals positioned around the city near checkpoints (who will blend in with the locals/tourists). Other teams will also be encouraged to make a note of any team seen using illegal transport options. Any team that is found to be cheating will be disqualified.
Q: HOW HARD WILL NAVIGATING AROUND THE CITY BE?
Not hard at all, if you can read a street directory, you will not have any trouble navigating the course.
Q: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN CATEGORIES?
Male, Mixed or Female teams can decide to enter the “Racing Category” or the “Social Category”. Both categories will be racing on the same course.
Q: WILL MY RACE BIBS BE MAILED TO ME PRIOR TO THE EVENT?
Q: WILL MY PRE-PURCHASED MERCHANDISE BE MAILED TO ME PRIOR TO THE EVENT?
Q: CAN I GET A REFUND IF I WITHDRAW FROM THE EVENT?
Q: HOW DO I “MARK” A SUCCESSFUL CHECKPOINT?
At registration you will be issued with a timing stick. It will record your visit to each of the check points along the course and your finish time, giving you an overall time for the event. All checkpoints will be equipped with a timing control where you have to punch in to verify a successful completion. It is your responsibility to check in with race officials and keep track of how many checkpoints you have completed.
Q: DO I HAVE TO VISIT ALL THE CHECKPOINTS?
No, the format of the Urban MAX allows teams to chose the amount of checkpoints they visit. Time penalties will only be applied for failing to cross the finish line on time.
Q: DO WE VISIT THE CHECKPOINTS IN A CERTAIN ORDER?
No. Teams are given the freedom to choose their own route. This is part of the challenge, you may be a fast team but can you fight your way through the city in the most efficient way.
Q: HOW DO I FIND THE CHECKPOINTS?
Teams will be given a map and list of the checkpoints at the beginning of the race. These will be easy to find, once you have solved the clue sheet that is!
Q: IS THE EVENT TIMED?
At registration you will be issued with a timing stick. It will record your visit to each of the check points along the course and your finish time, giving you an overall time for the event.
Q: IS THERE A TIME CUT OFF?
All teams must return to the finish by the cut off time of 3pm in order to be ranked. Making it back to the Finish in time is all part of the strategy of the event.
Q: ARE THERE PRIZES?
Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place (mixed, male and female teams) in the “Racing” category. Random spot prizes will also be handed out to some lucky “Social” category teams at presentation.
